A day in the life of an IT Security Specialist at flydocs

At flydocs, we truly believe in investing in our teams to promote a positive environment for work-life balance and career growth in tandem.

Below Swarna Vats, IT Security Specialist at flydocs, shares what a typical day in her role looks like and answers some of our burning questions about being a woman working in cybersecurity!

What’s it like being a women in tech?

Being a women in tech is sometimes challenging: to-date, especially in the field of cybersecurity, there are less women and it’s more male dominated, but this makes me feel very privileged to work in this domain.

It can be a challenging field with long hours, especially if there’s an outage that needs immediate attention once in a while. But that’s part of life and as a women in tech, it teaches me how to handle such situations.

Swarna Vats - IT Infrastructure Engineer

Also, I need to ensure that I stay updated with the latest trends and technology on the market because everybody is always on the internet now, so it’s crucial our activity stays secure.

There’s a lot of responsibility on my shoulders on the organisational side as well: I have to ensure everything within the business is securely accessed without compromising the user interface. Therefore, it’s important to get a balance of making things easy for our customers while being secure. This can be a challenge but I have a very supportive team and manager which makes a huge difference.

Along with ensuring the cybersecurity of the business, I also contribute to user awareness training, compliance and audits, security accreditations, threat monitoring and handling, etc. It may sound overwhelming, but with the right support that flydocs provides me and the flexibility to work on my own time helps me drive this side of the business smoothly.

How do you overcome the challenges of a cybersecurity role?

While cybersecurity enables innovation to take place across every sector in the modern digital world, it requires organisations to overcome various challenges, including infrastructure complexity, resource constraints, cybersecurity awareness gaps, evolving threats, and third-party risks.

I like to adopt a proactive and strategic approach to cybersecurity, investing in employee training and awareness, leveraging industry-best security solutions and staying abreast of the evolving threat landscape by prioritising cybersecurity investments.

I think the key to overcome challenges in the field of cybersecurity is to innovate and keep up with the technology. Every new innovation in the field of technology requires cybersecurity. Cyber resilience is not a destination but a journey; an ongoing effort to adapt, evolve and strengthen defenses in the face of evolving cyber threats.

What’s the best part of working at flydocs for you?

I’ve been working with flydocs for almost four years now, with much of this time working from home.

It’s been a tremendous experience to be frank: when I started working from home, I became pregnant and had my baby girl. Even if I had a few challenges throughout that time, I never really felt it because I didn’t have to travel or have a hectic lifestyle, which I wouldn’t have been able to manage with a small child and lots of responsibilities.

Working from home gave me the opportunity to focus on my work and career, along with ensuring my new baby is well taken care of. Now, my girl is two years old and throughout that time, flydocs has supported me to make this journey of motherhood very easy without compromising on my career. That’s one of the best parts about the company – the work culture and flexibility is very, very good.

What’s your top tip for other women who wants to work in IT Infrastructure?

The most important point is to stay updated with the latest technology. The world and technology is growing and if you want to be in tech, you have to grow yourself as well.

When I started my career in IT, the cloud was in development stages and now everything is on the cloud, so I’ve also expanded by technical knowledge a lot since that time!

flydocs gave me a lot of opportunity too because we adapt to new technology and keep introducing it within our platform. This gives me the chance to advance as a women in the industry.
